DNA does have a major impact on a person’s health, however few medical conditions do or do not develop as the result of one individual gene variant. Most medical conditions are the result of a complex interaction of multiple gene variants and environmental conditions/ a person’s diet and exercise routine as well as habits, such as smoking and drinking, can affect the development of a particular condition.

Because of all of these factors, it is often difficult to predict the likely impact of any particular gene variant. Some geneticists believe that except for those few conditions where one gene variant alone determines whether a person will develop the medical condition, it is safe to share all DNA data.

DNA and a Person’s Health

Unfortunately, a large percentage of the public does not understand the relatively week association between DNA and health. Often too much significance is given to, for example, a single SNP that indicates a slight increase in a person’s likelihood to develop a particular condition.

Ethically, each DNA-test-taker should consider his or her own beliefs as well as the thoughts and feelings of family members when making decisions about who to test and what data to share. From genetic Genealogy in Practice by Blaine Bettinger and Debbie Parker Wayne
